Black and White Photographers 3

1. I'm not sure exactly what it was that drew me to Eugene Atget's photos, but there's something aesthetically pleasing about each photo he took. He captured early Italy's unique beauty in the simplest and perfect way. I've always loved the style and culture of Italy, and seeing the older images of what cities looked like, it's intriguing to say the least.

2. In the third photo, if I was in that spot I would be able to smell the water and the soil around the trees. The water doesn't appear to be crystal clear, so I think it would smell like soil or plants that might be drifting in it. I could see the building on the other side of the river, and maybe some people that could be walking by. I could hear the tree branches swaying and rubbing against each other in the breeze, and I'd feel the wind on my skin. Maybe I could feel the stone pavement, and the bark of the tree in front of me. The only thing I could think of tasting is smell of the dead vegetation?

3. I think making a blog about Eugene Atget would be a perfect way to portray his life and photography style.

Nick Brandt and the Plains of Africa

A photographer named Nick Brandt took photo of the animals of Africa in their natural habitat. He spent months in Africa follow certain animals around, waiting for the perfect moment to snap a photo. All the hard work payed off! His photos had an amazing outcome, and I think every image is beautiful and unique in the way that the animal is exposed.

This is one of my favorite photos taken by Nick Brandt. It's a photo of a male lion laying on a rock with his paws in front of him, and he's looking off into the distance. The reason why I favor this picture so much is because the features of the lion in the picture is very defined, and his eyes look beautiful. The rule of photography, Simplicity, is relevant in this image. The lion is obviously the subject of the photo, and he is in the center of the photo, as well as the center of attention.

Nick Brandt is intrigued by the animals of Africa and wants to show animals "simply in the state of being." He's expressed that his goal with his photos is to spread awareness of the dangers the animals of Africa are plagued with, such as poaching. He hopes to expose the animals as their most peaceful self, and show the people who seem them, what beautiful creatures they're wiping out.

"There is also something deeply, emotionally stirring and affecting about the plains of Africa- those vast, green rolling plains punctuated by graphically perfect acacia trees under the huge skies." -Nick Brandt

Black and White Photographers Part II

Eugene Atget was born in Libourne, near Bordeaux in 1857 and died at age 70 August 4th 1927 in Paris, France. His parents died when he was 5, so he stayed with his maternal grandparents. After receiving secondary education, later on he was at sea as a cabin boy or sailor of some sort.
Atget moved to Paris in the late 1870's, determined to become an actor. After failing the entrance exam to drama school once, he passed the second time and became a student at Conservatoire d'art. However, he could not complete his studies due to being drafted for military services, so he was kicked out of the school. Still in Paris with the passion of acting, Atget became an actor with a group that preformed traveling around the Paris suburbs and provinces. He met his wife, actress Valentine Delafosse while he traveled around. Since he didn't have much success he officially quit acting in 1877, and experimented with painting as an amateur. After little progress, he gave up most of his passion for painting. Instead, he tested his skills with photography. He took his first photos in 1888, and self trained himself until he returned to Paris in 1890  to become a professional photographer after drifting around the outskirts of Italy. He sold photos to other artists and families, and continued photography throughout the rest of his life. His work was advertised by other artists as well.

The Three Pillars of Photography

Aperture F2.8

Aperture F16

1. The pupil is the body part that people closely relate to aperture because the pupil dilates depending on the amount of light passing through it, similar to a camera lens.
2.  The smaller the aperture the more focused the background of an image is. The higher the aperture the more focused a central object in a photo with become.
3. Aperture affects Depth of Field (the area of the image that appears sharp) directly since a smaller aperture focuses all items in a photo while a higher aperture does the opposite.

Photo taken at high shutter speed

Photo taken at slow shutter speed

1. When there's plenty of light in the courtyard, the shutter speed I would use for a photo of:
a. a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree, a slow shutter speed.
b. a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings, a high shutter speed
c. the Stars performance in the gyms, a slow shutter speed
d. Students dancing near the center of the courtyard, a slow shutter speed
e. People streaming in from the front doors, a slow shutter speed
f. the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop, slow shutter speed

When it's mostly dark in the courtyard, the shutter speed I would you for a photo of:
a. a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree, a high shutter speed
b. a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings, a high shutter speed
c. the Stars performance in the gyms, a high shutter speed
d. Students dancing near the center of the courtyard, a high shutter speed
e. People streaming in from the front doors, a high shutter speed.
f. the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop, high shutter speed

2. The three settings a camera has regarding setting shutter speed are Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual mode. With Aperture Priority you set the aperture lens while the camera selects a shutter speed. Setting the camera to Shutter Priority, the camera sets an aperture lens while you select a shutter speed. In Manual mode you can set the shutter speed and aperture lens yourself.

1. Setting the ISO to higher setting when the setting of a picture is dark would be an advantage in using a higher ISO while taking photos at a late night football game.
2. When there's high amounts of light, stick to a low ISO so you can achieve more detail.
3. Use a higher ISO if there's not enough light for the camera to quickly capture an image.

Mural Questions

1. What theme, that we could take here at school and think of one for OFF campus too, could we do a series of these panels to place around the school?
I think a theme we could use school sports. Such as football games and basketball.

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those who don't have camera phones?
I think the project should be open to both regular cameras and phone cameras. However, not all phone cameras have good quality, so it's probably best to stick to normal cameras.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?
I think the mural would look nice in the courtyard. I'm not sure where, but it should be somewhere where anyone can see it.
